Fixed Limit Omaha Preflop Tips
- Loose Opponents – You want to play hands that make good top pair top two pair types of hands against loose opponents. Your loose opponents are playing such a wide variety of hands that for the most part just playing higher cards than they do so that when you both make a pair yours is better you will win a lot of money from loose players. This doesn’t mean that you don’t want your hand to be as suited and connected as possible still, but you want to focus more on pairing value than anything.
- Tight Opponents – Tight opponents are going to be playing the strong top pair types of hands so you should be playing more draw favoring hands. Your tight opponent will be betting their hands that they make top pair with while you are looking to draw out on them and stack them. Normally when a draw comes in tight players slow down or give up so you can play aggressive as well against them when the draw comes in to take extra value whether you have hit or not. When you do hit and you have been aggressive your tight opponents will normally risk their entire stack because they are so set on their strong hand.
- Be Aggressive – Since the bet sizes are fixed you need to make sure that you get bets and raises in everywhere that you can. Make sure that you are betting and reraising as often as possible preflop. Since the bets are a forced amount and you can’t get more than that bet size you need to get as many of them in as you can. You will notice reraises get called a lot more in fixed limit preflop situations. This is because you can only reraise the set amount as well and your opponent will probably have correct odds to call.
- Be Comfortable – Only play hands that you are comfortable playing. In fixed limit you need to be able to read your pot odds and decide if a call or raise is correct over a fold. If it is hard for you to figure out the math on all of these odds then play a tight range of hands and learn those odds first. Once you have done this you can open up your range a bit more. Make sure you know your odds on the hands you can make on the flop.
- Don’t Play Trash – This goes along with playing comfortably. Just because you have odds to call a bet with a crappy hand does not mean that you have to call. If there are a lot of opponents and you are likely to fold on a later street then save yourself the extra bet and fold preflop. Odds are important, but it is easy to tell a bad hand from a playable hand. Make sure you aren’t playing bad hands.
